The short answer, by brand

Four of the five brands here are consistent enough to summarise in a line each. Use this to orient, then find your exact model in the tables below — because every brand has at least one exception.

Breville and Sage: 54mm, until the top of the range

Breville is the easiest brand to look up because Breville actually prints the figure. The entire Bambino and Barista line — the machines most people mean when they say “a Breville” — shares one 54mm brew system, which is why the Express, Impress, Pro and Touch pull such similar shots. The prosumer machines above them switch to the 58mm commercial standard, and that switch is a real reason to step up: it is a different accessory world, not just a bigger machine.

A useful cross-check on all of that: IMS, the Italian basket maker, sells a single 54mm precision basket and lists its compatibility as “Express, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Pro, Impress, Barista Touch, Infuser — doesn't fit JET model.” One parts listing confirms seven models and one exception in a sentence, which is more than the marketing copy manages. One wrinkle worth naming: Breville's 54mm baskets are frequently machined closer to 53.3mm at the bore, which is why tampers for these machines are sold as both “54mm” and “53.3mm.” They are the same platform. A 53.3mm tamper in a 54mm Breville basket is the correct fit, not a compromise — a tamper base has to sit fractionally under the basket bore or it cannot enter the basket at all.

Gaggia: 58mm on the Classic, and nothing to measure on the rest

Gaggia's catalog splits cleanly in two, and only one half of it has a portafilter at all. The Classic family is a 58mm commercial machine and has been for decades — that is the entire argument for buying one. Everything else Gaggia sells in the home range is a bean-to-cup super-automatic with an internal brew unit you never load by hand, so there is no diameter to look up and no accessory ecosystem to buy into.

De'Longhi: 51mm across the pump machines, and nobody publishes it

De'Longhi is the brand this chart exists for. Its pump machines are overwhelmingly 51mm, but the figure appears on none of the US product pages and in few of the manuals, so owners are left inferring it from third-party parts listings. We have done that inference explicitly below and labelled which rows rest on aftermarket evidence rather than a manufacturer specification — because that difference matters and most sites hide it.

The practical consequence of 51mm is not worse coffee — a well-pulled 51mm shot is a good shot — it is a smaller shelf. There are dozens of 58mm baskets and a healthy 54mm catalog; in 51mm there are a handful of genuinely good options and a lot of near-identical unbranded ones. Rancilio: 58mm on both home machines

Rancilio is the simplest entry in the chart. Both home machines carry the same 58mm commercial group the brand uses in cafes, and that is most of why people buy them — you are buying into a parts standard as much as a machine.

Chefman: 58mm on the Crema Supreme, per the retailers

This is the row people search for most often and the hardest one to answer honestly, so here is the whole picture. The Chefman Crema Supreme (RJ54-G-SS) is listed with a 58mm portafilterin Target's specification table (“Portafilter Size: 58mm”) and in the Amazon listing copy. Chefman's own instruction manual does not state the diameter anywhere, and a buyer's question in the manual Q&A asking for it sits unanswered. So the number is a retailer specification rather than a manufacturer one — well supported and consistent across two major retailers, but worth confirming with calipers before you spend real money on baskets.

If it holds — and the evidence says it does — that makes the Crema Supreme unusual: a grind-to-cup machine at mid-range money sitting on the commercial standard, with the whole 58mm parts bin available to it. The sizes that are not 51, 54 or 58

Three numbers cover most of the market but not all of it, and the outliers are exactly where people get stung — because a 53mm machine looks like a 54mm machine right up until the basket will not seat.

What has to match your size — and what does not

Once you have your number, this is the shopping rule. Size-locked, meaning you must buy your exact diameter:

• Filter baskets. The basket seats inside the portafilter body, so diameter and depth both have to be right. On a machine that shipped pressurized, this is the upgrade that changes the cup most.
• Tampers. The base must sit fractionally under the basket bore. Too small leaves an untamped ring the water races through; too large will not enter the basket at all.
• Distribution tools and levelers. A spinning distributor rides on the basket wall, so it is machined per size.
• Dosing funnels and puck screens. Both sit in or on the basket rim, and both rattle or bind at the wrong diameter.

Not size-locked:

• WDT tools. Needle-style distribution tools stir the grounds rather than fit the basket, so one tool works at any diameter. Ours are ranked in the best WDT tools roundup.
• Scales, milk pitchers, knock boxes, cleaning tablets. None of them touch the basket.

And the category of its own: bottomless (naked) portafilters, which are matched to the machine, not just the size. The lugs have to fit your group head, so a 58mm naked portafilter cut for an E61 machine will not lock into a Gaggia Classic or a Breville Dual Boiler even though all three are 58mm. How to confirm your number in about a minute

If your machine is not in the chart, or you want to be certain before spending, do this in order:

• Look for a number on the basket. Pop the basket out of the portafilter and check the underside and the outer wall. Many are stamped with the size, sometimes with the dose alongside it.
• Measure the basket bore. Measure the insidediameter across the top rim with calipers or a ruler — not the outside of the portafilter body, and not the spouts. Round to the nearest standard figure; a millimetre of error is normal, and the true answer is 49, 51, 53, 54 or 58.
• Search parts listings by model number.Aftermarket baskets and bottomless portafilters are sold by machine name, so a listing carrying “for EC155” and “51mm” in the same title is real evidence. That is exactly how the De'Longhi rows above were established.
