How to Descale an Espresso Machine

Descaling is the periodic deep-clean that removes hardened mineral deposits from the inside of your espresso machine. Step by step

The exact procedure varies by machine — a super-automatic runs its own guided routine, while a semi-automatic asks you to run solution through the group and steam wand by hand. Always use your model's instructions as the master copy. In general, though, a descale cycle follows the same shape:

  1. Read the manual and gather your kit. Confirm the descaling product your manufacturer specifies, and remove any internal water filter first, since acid can damage or waste it. Empty the drip tray.

Vinegar and what NOT to do

The internet is full of advice to descale with household vinegar. Be careful with it. The honest position is to use the descaler your manual specifies and treat anything else as a risk you are taking on yourself:

  • Do not use vinegar on aluminium boilers. Acetic acid can corrode aluminium and some other internal metals. Several popular machines (including many stovetop and budget units) have aluminium in the water path, and vinegar can do real, permanent damage there.

Prevent scale in the first place

Descaling removes scale after it forms; the smarter move is to slow how fast it forms in the first place. The lever that matters most is your water.
