A portafilter is the handle-and-basket you lock into an espresso machine — the small part where everything that matters in a shot actually happens. We named the site after it because that's our whole approach: pay attention to the parts that change the cup, and ignore the marketing on the front of the box.

Why this site exists

Home espresso is booming, and the buying advice hasn't kept up. Most "best espresso machine" articles are thin, interchangeable, and quietly steer you toward whatever pays the most — with no explanation of why one machine beats another, and no honest word about what the writer actually tested. We built Portafilter Co to do the opposite: compile every published spec, compute what a machine really costs to run, cross- check the manuals, and say plainly where hands-on time would tell you more than a spec sheet. Then we rank on that, and we show our work.

Who writes this

Portafilter Co is written and edited by Stephen V., an enthusiast who's genuinely into home espresso — someone who reads the manuals, compiles the published specs, and does the math. No lab coat, and no pretending to be a certified barista or a career reviewer. That honest framing is deliberate: we would rather be trusted for the work we actually do than borrow a credential we don't hold. Where we bring real value is method and transparency, not a wall of tested machines.

What makes us different

• Running-cost math nobody else publishes. We calculate energy cost and cost-per-shot with the inputs shown, so you can check them. We looked, and not one major espresso publisher does this.
• Live, date-stamped prices. Every price comes from the Amazon API and carries the date it was checked. Stale numbers vanish rather than mislead you.
• A "don't buy this if" line on every pick.The fastest way to lose your trust is to pretend a product is right for everyone. It isn't, and we say who should skip each one.
• Honest about testing. We tell you exactly what we did and did not hands-on test, on every page.

What we do NOT do

We don't run a test lab and we won't say we do. We don't accept payment for rankings or free products in exchange for a review. We don't invent credentials, customer ratings, or star counts.
