Espresso Pressure Problems, Diagnosed

Gushing shots, choked shots, and a pump that roars but builds no pressure each point to a different cause. Here is how to read the symptom and land on the real fix.

Espresso pressure problems almost always announce themselves in one of three ways: the shot gushes out fast and pale, the shot chokes and barely drips, or the pump gets loud and builds no pressureat all. The good news is that each symptom points to a fairly specific set of causes, so troubleshooting espresso is less about guesswork than it looks. This guide sorts the fixes by what you are actually seeing in the cup, because "my pressure is wrong" means something different in each case — and the wrong fix (say, reaching for the descaler when the real problem is your grind) just wastes a morning.

Before you change anything, it helps to know what you are aiming for. A proper espresso is brewed at roughly nine barsof pressure — that is the number the whole method is built around, and most home machines are designed to deliver it. But nine bars only happens when the coffee puck offers the right resistance to the water. Too little resistance and the water blows through (gushing); too much and it stalls (choking). So the vast majority of "pressure problems" are not really the machine at all — they are the puck, which means the fix is in your grind, dose and prep, not in the pump.

There is one important caveat that colors everything below: if you are using a pressurized (dual-wall) basket, it deliberately manufactures pressure through a pinhole and masks grind problems, so the usual symptoms read differently and some of these fixes will not respond the way they should. The 9-bar target (and the pressurized-basket caveat)

Espresso is defined partly by pressure: around nine bars of it, forcing hot water through a compacted bed of finely ground coffee in roughly 25 to 35 seconds. That resistance is what extracts the concentrated, syrupy shot with crema. Crucially, the machine does not create the resistance on its own — the coffee puck does. Nine bars is a partnership between the pump and a correctly prepared puck, which is why grind and dose dominate this whole topic.

The caveat: a pressurized basket cheats this system. Its pinhole builds back-pressure regardless of grind, so it will happily pull a normal-looking shot from a coarse or stale grind that a single-wall basket would gush straight through. That is helpful for beginners but it also hides the very signals you use to diagnose problems. Real diagnosis is far easier on a single-wall basket, ideally a bottomless portafilter where you can watch the puck.

Symptom 1: the shot gushes or pours too fast

If espresso blasts out in a thin, fast, pale stream and the shot is over in ten or fifteen seconds, the water is finding too little resistance. It tastes sour, weak and watery because it is badly under-extracted. Three causes, in order of likelihood:

  • Grind too coarse. This is the number-one cause. Coarse coffee lets water race through. Fix: grind finer, one step at a time, until the shot slows down.   • Underdosed.Too little coffee makes a shallow puck the water punches through. Fix: increase the dose to fill the basket properly (a double basket typically wants around 16–18g), leaving a little headroom below the group.
  • Channeling.Even with the right grind and dose, if the puck is unevenly distributed or tamped crooked, water bores a fast channel through the weak spot — you get a gusher on one side and dry coffee elsewhere. Symptom 2: the shot chokes or won't flow

The opposite problem: you lock in, start the pump, and almost nothing comes out — a slow drip, or a shot that takes a minute and tastes harsh, bitter and ashy from over-extraction. The water is meeting too much resistance. Causes:

  • Grind too fine.The most common cause, and the mirror of gushing. A grind that is too fine packs so tightly the water can barely pass. Fix: grind coarser, one step at a time, until the shot flows in the 25–35 second range.
  • Overdosed. Too much coffee leaves no headroom; the puck swells against the group screen and clamps down. Fix: reduce the dose so the tamped puck sits a few millimetres below the rim, with room to expand.
  • Tamped too hard, or both.An extremely firm tamp on an already-fine grind can stall a shot, though grind size matters far more than tamp pressure. Fix: tamp firmly and level, but do not lean on it — then adjust grind, which is the real lever. Puck-prep basics are in espresso puck prep.

A note: gushing and choking are two ends of one dial. If you overcorrect a gusher you will choke it, and vice versa. Change one variable at a time — usually grind — and give each change a full shot before judging.

Symptom 3: the pump is loud, or builds no pressure

This one is different, because it is genuinely about the machine rather than the puck. If the pump roars, surges, or the machine builds little or no pressure even with a well-packed basket, suspect these, in order:

  • Priming / air lock.If the pump is loud and water sputters or the machine has just been refilled, air is trapped in the line. Fix: prime it — run water through the group head or hot-water tap (no portafilter, or an empty one) until the flow is steady and the pump quietens. Always do this after the tank runs dry.
  • Water tank / intake. A tank not seated properly, a low water level, or a clogged intake valve starves the pump. Fix: reseat the tank, top it up, and check the intake hose is submerged and unkinked.
  • Scale (limescale buildup).Over months, mineral scale clogs the boiler, valves and group, throttling flow and pressure — especially in hard-water areas. Fix: descale on schedule.   • A failing pump. If it is primed, the tank is fine, and it is descaled but still cannot build pressure, the vibratory pump itself may be worn or dead. That is a genuine hardware fault and usually a repair or replacement.

A quick diagnostic order

When a shot goes wrong, resist the urge to change three things at once. Work this order:

  • Is the pump building pressure at all?If it is loud and empty, stop — prime it and check the tank before touching your grind. If it has been getting weaker for weeks, descale.
  • Is the flow way too fast or way too slow? That is grind. Move grind one step in the obvious direction and pull again.
  • Is the flow roughly right but the shot sprays, tastes uneven, or one side runs faster?That is distribution and tamp — a channeling problem, not a pressure one. Fix the puck prep.

Nine times out of ten the culprit is the grind, and the honest fix for chronic pressure trouble is a grinder that can actually grind fine and consistent for espresso, plus a precision single-wall basket that lets you read what is happening. My pump is loud and builds no pressure — what's wrong?
Start with priming: if the pump roars and sputters, especially after the tank ran dry, air is trapped in the line — run water through the group with no portafilter until the flow is steady. Next check the water tank is seated, full and the intake is not clogged or kinked. If it used to work and has slowly weakened, limescale is the likely culprit, so descale the machine. If it is primed, full and descaled but still dead, the pump itself may have failed.
Can a pressurized basket cause pressure problems?
Not the usual gushing or choking — a pressurized (dual-wall) basket deliberately builds back-pressure through a pinhole, so it masks grind problems and will pull a normal-looking shot even from coarse or stale coffee. How often should I descale to keep pressure up?
It depends on your water hardness and how often you brew, but every one to three months is a typical range — more often with hard water, less with filtered or soft water. Scale builds slowly and throttles flow and pressure over time, so a machine that used to pull fine and has gradually weakened is often just scaled up.
